Classroom Materials
The publisher has produced a free Teaching
Guide (PDF, 312k) to help you apply the material in Chicago
History for Kids to classroom activities.
In-
Class Presentations
The
author is available to conduct in-class presentations to students
on a variety of topics, such as:
- The
Origins of Chicago (From Prehistory to 1871)
- The
Great Chicago Fire (1871 to 1893)
- Child
Labor in Chicago
- The
Civil War in Chicago
- The
Home Front (Chicago During the World Wars)
- The
Great Migration (1916-1970)
- City
of Immigrants
- Chicago
Mayhem (Tragedies, Catastrophes, and Riots)
- Transportation,
Industry, and the Growth of a Metropolis
- Civil
Rights in Chicago
Customized
presentations can also be developed. For example, I once
did a presentation on George Pullman's contributions to Chicago as part
of a class field trip to the Pullman neighborhood and museum.
I've
also used a mock quiz show format in which kids compete for
small prizes (or just the thrill of victory) by answering questions on
Chicago history.
